Novak Djokovic is the Winner of the Vienna Opener and Comes Close to Pete Sampra’s Record

In a thrilling win, Novak Djokovic defeated Filip Krajinovic to come almost close to his childhood icon Pete Sampra’s all-time record of winning the world number one title on six matches.

Novac Djokovic defeated Filip Krajinovic in the first round of tennis match in Vienna and got really close to his childhood idol Pete Sampra’s record of winning the world number one title on six occasions. He defeated Krajinovic by 7-6 (8/6), 6-3. Now he just needs to win the next due match in Austria to be played against Borna Coric to get equal to the achievements of Sampras. Djokovic from Serbia has already been top-ranked at the end of a season five times in years 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2018. He just needs to win one more to get equal to Sampra’s record.

The same goals have been achieved by Djokovic’s career rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Sampras had achieved the feat continuously in six years from 1993 to 1998. Djokovic was playing in Vienna for the first time after 2007. He had already won a title back in 2007. Back then, he had dropped serve twice in a very tricky opening set.

Djokovic is a 17-time Grand Slam title winner and he appeared for this first tournament in Vienna against Krajinovic after suffering a big loss to Nadal in the Roland Garros final, around 2 weeks back. Currently Djokovic is trying to beat Federer’s all-time best record of 310 weeks spent on top of all the rankings. Djokovic started with his 292
